There was jubilation at Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) in Lilongwe yesterday when Mary Chilima, wife to Vice-President Saulos Chilima, unveiled a new state-of-the-art paediatric high dependency unit.

The 10-bed unit has been equipped with modern facilities, tiled and painted, courtesy of Beyond You—an initiative that saw seven young people walk 362 kilometres from Lilongwe to Blantyre to raise funds for the cause.

“Beyond You had a dream, today that dream is realised and we have borne witness to the unveiling of a fully-fledged brandnew pediatric high dependency unit,” Chilima said.

Chilima, who saw off the seven youth on day one and welcomed them on return, described the initiative by Beyond You as love in action.

“The facility we have unveiled today is a true reflection of love for others. It is modern and fitted with medical facilities of international standards. It will save lives,” she said.

Chilima also said she was impressed with how Beyond You took the social media by storm for a good cause during the fundraising campaign.

She said: “I was impressed by how Beyond You mobilised themselves by utilising social media to spread awareness of their noble cause and solicit funds to support it.  What do you and I use social media for? Does it make our lives better; does it make our community better?”

Beyond You founder Duwa Mvula said they were happy that their efforts to walk to Blantyre made a difference to Kamuzu Central Hospital.

“When we visited the ward for the first time, we were touched. It lacked crucial facilities that could save lives. We are happy that our dream has become a reality. Today makes us happy,” Mvula said.
