Lilongwe principal resident magistrate Viva Nyimba has granted bail to former minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development Symon Vuwa Kaunda who faces two charges of corruption and abuse of office.

But Kaunda will return to the court on January 6 2021 for plea on the charges based on offences he allegedly committed while serving in the Cabinet of former president Peter Mutharika.

Kaunda leaves the court yesterday

Nyimba granted Kaunda bail after he fulfilled the conditions of producing a K500 000 cash bond and a non-cash surety of K500 000. He was also ordered to surrender travel documents and to be reporting to the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) offices fortnightly.

Kaunda, who is a member of Parliament (MP) for Nkhata Bay Central, walked to freedom to a hearty welcome from his wife and some Democratic Progressive Party supporters.

The ACB arrested Kaunda on Tuesday for abuse of public office and corruption. He is being accused of irregularly authorising his former Cabinet colleague Charles Mchacha to lease public land belonging to the Department of Forestry in Kanjedza Forest, Blantyre
