Malawi’s former Youth and Sports minister Symon Vuwa Kaunda has more than doubled the sponsorship of the football tournament in his Nkhata Bay Central Constituency to K1.2 million from K500 000.

Vuwa Kaunda said the tournament, which has been a breeding ground for big-name players such as John ‘CJ’ Banda, his brother Frank, Seba Mhone and Luka Milanzi, has now been split into four zones.

“The organisers established that teams were spending a lot on expenses and it was, therefore, agreed that the tournament should be split into zones,” said Vuwa Kaunda.

He said the four zones will be Nkhata Bay Community Centre, which has been allocated K500 000, Nkhafu (K300 000), Bundu (K200 000) while schools have been allocated K200 000.

He also said the new format will increase the level of competition as teams from around community centre ground were always dominating.

“I would also like to see Nkhata Bay Central Constituency continuing to produce talent for big teams. The other thing is that sports keeps the youth away from engaging in immoral behaviour and contracting sexually transmitted infections such as HIV/Aids,” he said.

The district’s FAM representative Alexander Phiri thanked Vuwa Kaunda for his gesture, saying apart from Super League teams, the constituency also helps to provide talent to the national teams.

Meanwhile, Vuwa Kaunda has said talks are under way with FAM technical director Jack Chamangwana to conduct a coaching clinic in the area.
