Presidential adviser on security and parliamentary affairs Symon Vuwa Kaunda has appealed to residents of Area 23 and Chilinde in Lilongwe to maintain peace and report all suspicious activities to police.

In his address on Tuesday, Kaunda said President Peter Mutharika asked him to appeal to the residents to maintain peace.

He said: “The issue of security has been talked about at length and people are now living in fear, but what we are saying here is that we need to be cooperative and work with the police in apprehending these thugs.

“Some of these thugs live among us, we chat with them and some are even renting our houses, please let us make this country habitable. Insecurity issues chase away investors and therefore slows down development, I am sure you don’t want this to happen.”

Lilongwe City Council mayor Willie Chapondera said the city is doing all it can to step up security.

“Let it be known that as a mayor, I am working with the police in making sure that we apprehend all these thieves terrorising citizens, we cannot be living in fear because of such people and I promise you that we will get to the bottom of this very soon,” he said.

During the tour, Kaunda and Chapondera met police officers in the two areas over insecurity issues in the country.
