The public, however, has blamed government for the security lapse, saying it not doing enough to protect people and property.

Speaking during an interface meeting with Mzuzu business community, security agents and Mzuzu City Council last Wednesday, Kaunda said it is high time business owners started to value security to protect their investments.

He said providing security is not the sole responsibility of government. Kaunda said security is a multi-sectoral issue and traders need to take part to ensure a secure and peaceful nation.

He said there are a number of business people who have the capacity to support the security sector, but do not do so despite being at risk.

Said Kaunda:  “You pay someone K4 000 [$8] to guard millions of kwacha and when robbers break into the shop and steal items, you blame government. You need to invest in security.”

He appealed to owners of drinking points to stick to regulation, arguing some pubs harbour criminals by operating beyond licenced hours. He said criminals hide in such pubs to avoid police patrols.

Kaunda also advised managers of lodges and other accommodation facilities to always ask for their customers’ details and question customers that over-stay

Mzuzu City mayor William Mkandawire said all players have to be involved in combating crime, saying everyone is in one way or the other affected by robberies and other security challenges.
