Wanderers cautions official over foul political comments

Be Forward Wanderers have cautioned their supporters committee general secretary Samuel Mponda over vulgar political social media post targeting opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP).

Mponda, a staunch ruling Democratic Progress Party (DPP) loyalist, frequently posts political comments on his Facebook page.

On Wednesday, he posted what most of his followers described as distasteful for an official of a well-established football club. In it he castigated the MCP women sympathisers as prostitutes.

Mponda: They are interfering in my private life

In an interview yesterday, the Nomads’ chairperson Symon Sikwese said the club was shocked with his comments.

He said although he used his personal platform, the club has a policy that bars its officials from posting hateful and inflammatory social media posts.

“We have cautioned him because we feel that he went far. The club has also asked him to delete the post and apologise,” he said.

Sikwese further stated that the club might take further action once it finalises reviewing the matter.

In an interview, Mponda confirmed being warned, but said he was surprised that “Wanderers was interfering in his private life”.

“I have taken down the post because I respect what the chairperson told me when I was summoned over the post. However, I am baffled that a personal opinion was treated as if I was posting on the club page,” he said.
