Kuwali: We are grateful

The Weightlifting and Bodybuilding Association of Malawi (Wbam) has announced that this year’s K1 million (US$2 457) Presidential Initiative for Sports (PIS) will take place on April 5 at Wanderers Club in Blantyre.

The association’s president, Richard Kuwali, said the tournament is open to everyone.

“We have been given the K1 million (US$2 457), which is our allocation to run the competition. We are grateful to Sports Council for this. We hope the competition will be a success as we are also trying to identify raw talent to be included in our national team,” said Kuwali.

He then appealed to weightlifters to utilise the opportunity.

“The tournament will start at 1pm. We are calling on all weightlifters [male and female] to come and participate in the competition. They should all register through national coach Chimwemwe Bakali,” said Kuwali.

He also said the association will soon conduct regional bodybuilding competitions.

“I also want to announce that the Mr. Malawi Tournament will take place in October. We are currently in talks with our sponsor, Mr. Zubair, on the breakdown in prizes. He [Zubair] is very committed to sponsoring the event,” said Kuwali.

Zubair, who is managing director of ETC Agro Tractors, confirmed that they will sponsor the tournament just like they did last year.

“We also will increase prize money to make it more competitive,” said Zubair on the sidelines of a roadshow his company organised to showcase Mahindra Rise vehicles in Lilongwe.
