Wanderers dent Silver title hopes

Listen to this article

Mighty Wanderers on Saturday frustrated Silver Strikers’  hopes in the TNM Super League title following a 1-0 win at Silver Stadium.

The result also dented Silver’s perfect home record.

Vincent Nyangulu was the hero of the day when his 31st minute goal gave the visitors maximum three points.

Stanley Saudi made a solo effort to outpace Silver defenders and weighed a good cross to Nyangulu to score.

Prior to the goal, Peter Wadabwa missed a golden opportunity when he failed to control the ball from Yamikani Chester’s pass inside the box.

Silver, who have 52 points, trail league leaders Nyasa Big Bullets by five points, but the People’s Team have a game in hand. On the other hand, Wanderers have 45 points and on third position.

The hosts created the first clear chances but Maxwell Gasten Phodo blasted over from close range a Blessings Tembo cross.

Stain Davie also had an opportunity in the 15th minute but Richard Chipuwa produced an outstanding save.

Wanderers started strongly in the second half with Vitumbiko Kumwenda, Chester, Wadabwa and Nyangulu dictating the game.

Nyangulu’s chance for a brace in the 51st minute was thwarted by goalkeeper Charles Thom.

Silver’s midfield of Levison Maganizo, Young Chimodzi Jnr, Tembo and Zebron Kalima was outplayed, piling pressure on the defenders.

This forced Silver to substitute Levison Maganizo and Young Chimodzi Jnr for Nixon Mwase and Chisomo Mpachika, respectively.

The move paid dividends as they reorganised to attack, but the visitors held on.

A jubilant Wanderers coach Bob Mpinganjira attributed the win to his players’ hard work.

He said: “It was a difficult game. It really was tough but we played well. It’s a good result against a big team. It’s not easy to win here [at Silver Stadium].”

On his part, Silver assistant coach McDonald Yobe rued lost opportunities.

Said the assistant coach: “We were punished because we could not make use of the numerous opportunities we created.

“We had great chances to win the game but we couldn’t score. It hurts because we played well. We don’t deserve this result.”
