Wanderers dream of top position

Listen to this article

Though seemingly a far-fetched dream, second-placed Be Forward Wanderers can come out of this weekend on top of the TNM Super League.

All they need to do is to collect maximum points in today’s fixture against Mafco and tomorrow’s against Dwangwa United at Chitowe Stadium in Dwangwa, Nkhotakota.

But they need to score not less than 12 goals without conceding and then pray that Azam Tigers do them a favour by derailing Bullets tomorrow at Kamuzu Stadium so as to leapfrog the leaders on goal difference—quite a tall order.

Bullets lead the 16-team log table with 61 points with a goal difference of 36 while Wanderers are second with 55 points with a goal difference of 24.

This afternoon, the Nomads face Mafco, who are on position 15 with 29 points and have already kissed the top-flight league goodbye.

But history has shown that relegated teams have nothing to lose and often frustrate those fighting for something.

Dwangwa are just above relegation on position 13 with 34 points from 28 games and can also not afford a slip-up.

Wanderers team manager Steve Madeira admitted that achieving this is a tall order but not impossible.

“We have very tough assignments against Mafco and Dwangwa. But the good thing is that we are on song. Our catching up with Bullets also depends on Azam Tigers derailing Bullets. That is our wish,” he said.

The Nomads are coming from a 1-0 victory over Mzuzu University (Mzuni) that helped them move to second position replacing Silver Strikers who are on bye this weekend.

Bullets on the other hand, switch their attention from CAF Champions League to the Super League campaign.

Team manager James Chilapondwa said they are aware of the task ahead of them as they hope to consolidate their lead at the top.
