Wanderers move to fourth

Mighty Wanderers did their mathematical TNM Super League title aspirations a favour in easing to a 2-0 win over luckless Azam Tigers at Kamuzu Stadium on Saturday.

On 42 points from 25 games, jumping from fifth to fourth, Nomads can pounce on any uncharacteristic slip-up among the top three title chasers Silver Strikers, Blantyre United and Big Bullets. Wanderers leapfrogged Red Lions, who drew 1-1 with Moyale Barracks also on Saturday, on goal difference.

The Nomads struggled to control the game against Tigers, but experience proved to be the better teacher.

Against the run of play, Tigers made a clearance from a corner and after some exchanges on either side, the ball found Alfred Manyonzo Junior who volleyed from outside the 18-yard area in the 20th minute.

Tigers kept on pressing and passing, but their final ball lacked the precision to carve open Nomads’ Foster Namwela-commanded defence. Anthony Kaipa thought he had done enough from an overhead kick, but it was weak, allowing Wanderers goalkeeper Richard Chipuwa to smother the ball in the 39th minute.

The second-half continued in a similar fashion with Tigers, positioned eighth on 36 points from 25 games, being the most entertaining, but with no goal to show.

Nomads coach Felix Fosiko’s substitution of Moses Chavula and Cuthbert Sinetre for Francis Mulimbika and Mapopa Msukwa respectively failed to change the tide of the game with Tigers substitute Maxwell Mwanyongo whipping in dangerous right crosses.

But Fosiko again pulled out Gomezgani Gondwe for Loti Kamanga. It meant striker Victor Mpinganjira replacing Gondwe on the right wing and the towering Kamanga partnering Gerald Phiri Junior upfront.

The move increased aerial strength for Wanderers and soon, they won a free-kick which resulted in a dropped ball for Mpinganjira to fire into the roof of Tigers ‘keeper Nenani Juwaya’ net in 77th minute.
