Wanderers set up Carlsberg final against rivals Bullets

Be Forward Wanderers yesterday edged Moyale Barracks 1-0 to set up a potentially explosive Carlsberg Cup fiinal clash against their age-old rivals Big Bullets.

Victor Nyirenda, who was making his second appearance for the Nomads following his return to Lali Lubani Road from Asia, struck the priceless goal in the 22nd minute that sent Nyerere into ecstasy at Civo Stadium in Lilongwe.

Nyirenda scored with a header past Moyale’s goalkeeper Juma Chikwenga.

Mapopa Msowoya failed to double the lead seven minutes later when he dribbled past a horde of Moyale defenders,  before rounding off ‘keeper Chikwenga, but to the disbelief of the fans, shot wide.

Moyale felt they were denied a genuine goal by referee Duncan Lengani after he ruled offside Dan Katunga’s strike in the 73rd minute into the game.

“We have lost yes. It is a game which I think we could have won, but things went wrong. We accept the loss,” said a disappointed Moyale coach Nicholas Mhango in a post-match brief.

Wanderers team manager Steve Madeira expressed delight at the win and vowed to win the cup.

“It was a difficult game, but the boys showed resilience and managed to hold on to the lead despite pressure from our opponents. Now we can go all the way and win the cup,” said Madeira.

Nomads will face Bullets in the final match slated for August 29 at Civo Stadium.

To qualify for the finals, Bullets thumped Silver Strikers 3-0 on Saturday at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre.
