Water and sanitation in some health facilities in Ntchisi  are expected to improve following WaterAid Malawi commitment to address water challenges  in the district’s public health facilities.

WaterAid head of grants and fundraising Yankho Mataya said this on Saturday at Ntchisi District Hospital during this year’s presentation of items sourced by Nation Publications Limited (NPL) from various partners through Mother’s Fun Run initiative.

As WaterAid, our intention is to develop a long-term strategy to support this work. We will begin by supporting Chinguluwe Health Centre which currently has no running water and relies on a shared borehole with the rest of the community. It also has limited sanitation and hygiene facilities,” she said.

Director of health services in the Ministry of Health, Charles Mwansambo, commended NPL—publishers of The Nation, Weekend Nation, Nation on Sunday, Fuko and Nation Online—for rescuing Ntchisi women from maternal health and sanitation challenges.

“One death is a big loss. No woman should die while giving birth,” he said.

Ntchisi district medical officer Grace Momba could not hide her excitement, saying the items will alleviate most of the challenges faced in the district’s 12 health facilities.

About 162 babies and 12 mothers die each year due to delivery related complications in Ntchisi, according to Momba.

Through Mother’s Fun Run initiative, NPL seeks to promote safe motherhood in public health facilities nationwide.
