We take it for granted

Listen to this article

It’s something we tend to take for granted and dismiss at the wave of the hand, but have we seriously reflected on the fact that our netball side has over a decade been perched among the elite of world netball? The enormity of this achievement is rarely acknowledged and appreciated because we are enslaved by football, so much so that we begin to believe that the perennial under-achievements of the Flames are better than the lofty performances of the Queens.

It is because of this lopsided reasoning that we continue to invest in wrong priorities that the hopeless Flames represent. It’s one of those things I don’t understand about how we think as a nation. The Flames, in their usual wobbly, tired legs, will never climb the dizzy heights of the global game, not in my life time or my great grandchildren’s.

Come to think of it; Malawi in the top 10 of world rankings in sport! Make no mistake, it’s netball, not the poverty index where we have turned the lower rungs our permanent home. For once, we feel a sense of belonging in the global community. Thank you the Queens, our pride!
