Fast-growing medical insurer, Wella Medical Aid Society (Wemas), on Wednesday donated assorted basic necessities worth K100,000 to Mchinji-based mother of triplets.

The assistance followed an SOS sent by Mchinji district social welfare officer Joyce Malika who called on well-wishers to donate anything they can afford, considering that the mother, Siwema Joseph, 30, and her husband, Abraham Sentiasi, 32, are poor and have barely enough to sustain the livelihood of the three children.

The family now has six children in total.

The triplets were born prematurely end January 2022, and had to be refereed to kangaroo care services.

Making a donation, Wemas sales and marketing manager Fenwick Mussa said the company was touched by the story of the Joseph-which was first published in The Nation edition of Tuesday, March 1, 2022.

According to Mussa, social and economic growth of a country like Malawi depends on healthy people, hence it was important for others to join the bandwagon by donating other necessities to the family.

Mussa: Wemas will continue making such donation for three months

“As a medical insurance company, we thought it wise to come and contribute something to the woman so that she and all her three new born babies are in robust health. Overall, the interest of everyone is that he or she is fit healthy wise so that everyone participates in the development activities of the country,” said Mussa.

He said some of the items that were donated include milk, food supplements, baby blankets, diapers, clothes, and sugar.

According to Mussa, Wemas will make such similar donations for the next two more months and plans to spend K300,000 on aggregate.

Commenting separately on the matter, Malika concurred with Mussa that every Malawian has the right to be in good health, but appealed to well-wishers for more support.

On her part, Joseph thanked Wemas for the gesture and appealed for other private companies and individuals to emulate Wemas.

Currently, Wemas is the only medical scheme in Malawi which accommodates people above 55 years of age through its pensioners’ medical scheme.

The company is also the only medical scheme in Malawi which is using biometric system.

Besides, Wemas sits among a few medical schemes in Malawi which does not seek shortfalls from its customers.

The medical insurer now has a network of over 200 hospitals from Nsanje to Chitipa.
