World Food Programme (WFP) under the coordination of the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (Dodma) on Saturday distributed relief items to 207 flood victims at Mikolongwe evacuation centre in Chikwawa District.
WFP’s assistance was in response to the flood situation and the organisation dispatched food stock to the victims. As of Saturday, 75 metric tonnes was dispatched to Chikwawa.
Each household received 37.5 kilogrammes (kg) of maize, one litre of cooking oil, three kg super cereal and five kg of pulses.
WFP head of sub-office Peter Otto said the food items will be delivered to 8 900 displaced people currently camping in community structures that are accessible by roads.
“Access to the hardest affected areas to assess the situation has been extremely difficult as floods have washed away roads,” he said.
Speaking after receiving the relief items, one of the beneficiaries, Demister Galeta, said he is happy because he was in a hopeless situation after losing all his belongings.
The donation was handed over to World Vision International (WVI) who are coordinating response and facilitating registration of victims.
