When government fails to serve the poor

Listen to this article

waterLimited access to safe drinking water is one of the most serious problems affecting Malawi today, especially in the rural areas where the majority of the poor lives. With the rainy season settling in and rain water finding its way into rivers and streams where it carries with it all sorts of germs, outbreaks of cholera and other water-borne diseases are likely to spread. School children such as these girls captured during break time drinking this dirty water from a river at Tchalo, Sub-traditional Authority (S-T/A) Chapinduka in Rumphi and the boy saving his water in the bottle for a drink later, are the most at risk; with their education outcomes likely to take a knock under such unhealthy living and learning environments.
