Where are people of integrity in positions of authority?

Dear judge Mbadwa,

Were you surprised, My Lord, with the ‘theatre of absurd’ that was enacted by some members of the now defunct Cabinet Committee on coronavirus?

I wasn’t a bit astounded to see Bottle-Man and his colleague yapping in ‘loud’ hushed tones something they didn’t want the public to hear; that the cat about allowances they vehemently denied to ever having received had finally been let out of the bag by some citizens.

Minister of Health Jappie Mhango (L) and Minister of Information Mark Botomani share notes before briefing journalists on Covid-19 fight

My Lord, I have always held the view that Cabinet Committee had metamorphosed into some money- minting venture for some unpatriotic people.

I did point out that the committee belittled the serious fight against the coronavirus pandemic because of the casual manner they conducted business and as they say, the casual approach begets casualties and that is not something I am praying for to happen in this country.

The revelation is somewhat an insult to all those frontline health workers who asked for a modest risk allowance they genuinely deserve in view of the pandemic but only got peanuts after being spat at by a group that rewarded itself on their make-believe risks.

It was with good reason, My Lord, that I pointed out in one of my legal opinions that the committee was ill-prepared, ill-informed and too compromised to make decisions on the pandemic on behalf of Nyasas.

Sadly though, we have taken ages to clean up the vomit spewed as it is is already glued to the floor of the nation’s well being, yet no apology has been offered nor has a resignation followed the exposition.

The appointing authority, My Lord, has decided to look the other way as life goes on without even sanitising the self-inflicted calamity.

We know no one is going to resign or going to get the sack over the matter yet this scandal will become an indictment on the establishment.

Thanks to the unintended exposition, we know how citizens have been lied to; but what about the lies that have escaped the radar of the prying eyes of the people because they were never exposed?

Does anyone have the moral ground to expect Nyasa to believe whatever comes out of their mouths now on how taxpayers is being used or abused?

People who are supposed to exercise their function with honesty have confirmed what everyone has believed all along; that the word integrity does not exist in the vocabulary of most politicians.

You rarely find people of integrity in most sectors because the society has been adulterated by seeds of dishonesty sown by self-serving officials, especially politicians.

Now that your suspicions, My Lord, on the handling of the coronavirus have been confirmed, why don’t you include in your forthcoming ruling an order that the committee members pay back the money they illegally drew as allowances before you arraign them for abuse of office?

I am looking forward to reading your judgement again and I think it is high time we stopped the rot.

In anticipation,

John Citizen.
