There was drama at Balaka Stadium Sunday afternoon, when a whirlwind and a swarm of bees briefly disrupted the TNM Super League game between Red Lions and Mafco.

During the all-soldiers affair, Red Lions beat Mafco 2-0 to come to second on the table, with 32 points. They are two points behind leaders Silver Strikers.

Chikoti Chirwa scored the opener for Lions in the 23rd minute. Five minutes later, a heavy wind blew from the southern part of the stadium, near the VIP stands, forcing referee Anthony Rafael to temporarily stop the proceedings.

Some fans were overheard shouting: “A Mafco mwatumiza kavuluvulu, mwayamba za mankhwala [Mafco have sent the whirlwind, it is juju].” .

Another round of drama came 25 minutes into the second-half when a swarm of bees flew across the eastern side of the pitch. Again, the match was briefly stopped as some players lied down to allow the bees to pass.

Five minutes after the whirlwind, Kumbukani Mwambeni sealed the win for Lions after collecting a lofty cross from Boniface Kaulesi.
