The Malawi arm of the Winners Chapel International joined the rest of the world on May 1 to celebrate 33 years of existence.

Winners Chapel International was founded in May 1981 by Nigerian Bishop David Oyedepo.

The church has since spread to many countries throughout the world, including Malawi.

Winners Chapel opened its doors in Malawi in 1998 in Blantyre before spreading to Lilongwe and other districts.

Today, the church has a network of 38 churches spread in 25 districts.

The church’s faithful in Lilongwe commemorated the day by holding thanksgiving prayers, a road carnival and donations to an orphanage in Area 23 and Kamuzu Central Hospital.

Pastor Richard Atiayao, head of Winners Chapel in the country, said the church has every reason to thank God for his mercies during the past 33 years of its existence.

“God has been faithful to the church and we really need to thank Him for his mercies,” said Atiayao after leading the faithful in thanksgiving prayers at the church headquarters in Mchesi Township.

The church made a cash donation of K52 000, food items, groceries and clothes to children at Chilungamo Orphan Care Centre before making a similar donation to the referral hospital.

Atiayao said the donations were aimed at demonstrating the love that Jesus displayed when he was in this world, especially to those in need.

“We want these children to know that Jesus loves them. We, therefore, felt obliged to come and help them in a little way,” he said.

The orphanage’s coordinator Wellington Msonda thanked Winners Chapel for the donation which he said would help in lessening the problems orphans face.

“We feel blessed that out of so many orphanages and places of need that the church could have gone to, to make this donation, Winners Chapel chose our orphanage,” said Msonda.

Winners Chapel’s birth and foundation emanated from a vision Bishop Oyedepo had in 1981 in which God mandated him to spread the gospel.
