Police in Dowa are keeping in custody a 29-year-old witchdoctor who allegedly collected K410 000 by promising to resurrect a dead girl.
Dowa Police Station spokesperson Richard Kaponda said the suspect, Filudi Smock, tricked the Cheyo family that he could resurrect their dead daughter, Esther, who died in March this year.
“The doctor told the mother of the deceased that they should pay K410 000 for him to bring back their daughter to life but after receiving the money there was no sign of life on Esther’s grave and we arrested him after the mother of the family reported to police,” said Kaponda.
He disclosed that Esther was 17 when she died at Dowa District Hospital where she was admitted after suffering from general body pains.
Smock will appear in court to answer charges of pretending to tell fortunes which is contrary to Section 325 of the Penal Code.
He comes from Kachepatsonga Village, T/A Msakambewa in the district. n
