Wizards fire coach

Push comes to shove. Struggling PremierBet Wizards have fired coach Trevor Kajawa due to poor performance.

The team seemed to be heading to the lower league after a 0-1 loss to Mafco at the weekend.

The defeat was the Blantyre-based outfit’s 11th and sixth successive loss as they are stuck on position 15 on the table, prompting the management to weild the axe.

Kajawa: I wish the team all the best

Wizards owner and technical director Peter Mponda said they had to take action before it was too late.

He said: “During pre-season, we were ready and we did start well. But along the way, things changed. Things were not just going the way we wanted.”

But Kajawa, who still had some three months before his contract expires, said while the team’s performance was deplorable, he was not the only one responsible.

He said: “Whenever the team is not doing well, most of the times the blame is on the coach. But for a team to perform, it is not only the coach’a responsibility. The players need to be motivated to play well. The technical panel also needs to be supported by the executive for result to come. I have accepted my firing and I wish the team all the best. But for the team to start winning, the executive must address the above issues.”

Meanwhile goalkeepers trainer Simeon Kapuza is now the caretaker coach starting this afternoon when Wizards face Mzuzu University (Mzuni) FC at Mzuzu Stadium. n
