Dowa Police spokesperson Richard Kaponda confirmed the incident in an interview with the Malawi News Agency (Mana).

Kaponda said the suspect, Esther Mwalala, went to Kantikana’s house on Monday at around 8am with K20 000 (about $58).

“She offered the magistrate the cash so that in return, he acquits her husband, Malingana Phiri, aged 40, who is answering charges of robbery at the court,” claimed Kaponda.

He said Kantikana tipped off the law enforcers who arrested her.

Mwalala, who comes from Malenga Village in Traditional Authority Masula in Lilongwe, is expected to answer the charge of corrupting an officer.
