Woman arrested for deserting 4-month-old baby

Police at Kanengo Station on Monday arrested a 19-year old girl for allegedly deserting a four-month-old baby boy at Area 25, Lilongwe.

Station assistant public relations officer, woman constable Salome Chibwana, confirmed the arrest of Sugeni Misheck.

Misheck comes from Bakita Village, Traditional Authority Msanama in Balaka.

Chibwana said the baby was dumped outside someone’s residence in Area 25A.

“The baby was found outside the house by an 11-year-old boy who reported to police officers at Area 49 police road block. The officers took it to Deayang Hospital. Later on we arrested the mother who will soon appear before court,” said Chibwana

She said Mischeck confessed during interrogations that she deserted the baby after she heard that the father of the child had impregnated another girl.

She said the father of the baby who is a member at CCAP Livingstonia Synod, does not send support for his son–that is why she dumped the baby.

Mischeck will answer charges of deserting a child which is contrary to section 169 of Penal code. n
