Police in Dowa have arrested a 40-year-old woman for allegedly being found in possession of a dead baby.
Dowa Police Station spokesperson Richard Kaponda identified the suspect as Esnart Yusuf of Besela Village in Traditional Authority Msakambewa in the district.
He said the suspect was arrested after a tip-off that she was faking the pregnancy.
“The suspect was married to a certain man in Kasungu but they broke up and she later got married to another man also from Besela Village. On Sunday morning [February 25] she informed her mother-in-law, Delia Chiweza, that she had given birth to a still-born,” said Kaponda.
The curious mother-in-law took the suspect to Dzaleka Health Centre for medical examination where it was established she had not recently delivered and that she was not pregnant, according to Kaponda.
The police spokesperson said during interrogations, the suspect confessed that she exhumed a corpse of a baby at a graveyard near Dowa District Hospital.
“Police visited the scene where the dead body was exhumed and it was reburied,” he said.
