Chitipa First Grade Magistrate’s Court has sentenced Monica Mtegha, 26, to 18 months imprisonment after finding her guilty of wounding her husband.

The court heard from State prosecutor Lucy Kamkwete that on February 1 2019, Mtegha attacked her husband, Jeremiah Mlenga, with a broken glass bottle.

She said Mtegha, on that particular day, went to her co-wife’s house where Mlenga was, to ask for money which he had promised to give her.

“At that time, the husband reportedly had no money to give her and she started shouting at him and his first wife. Mtegha later took a broken bottle and cut him in the neck and stomach,” said Kamkwete.

Mtegha pleaded guilty to the charge of unlawful wounding and in mitigation asked the court for leniency, saying she was a first offender and looks after her two sisters.

In his ruling, first grade magistrate Julius Kalambo said the convict deserved a stiff punishment for her violent behaviour.

Mtegha comes from Mkombanyama Village, Traditional Authority Mwaulambya in Chitipa.
