The accident happened when a Nissan truck registration MH6786/MH5040 overturned as it tried to evade an oncoming lorry travelling in the middle of the road.

The deceased has been identified as Monica Mpulula. The driver, who is also husband to the deceased, is Mafuleka Mpulula from Chimpetsa Village, T/A Kadewere in Chiradzulu. The two others are yet to be identified.

Mzuzu Police spokesperson Maurice Chapola said the accident happened around 11pm near Kaka Motel in Luwinga.

The truck belonging to Khan Properties was travelling from Mzuzu to Ekwendeni. When they reached Kaka Motel, the truck’s trailer collided with the protruding tobacco bales lorry, registration RU 3975. This resulted in the truck losing balance before overturning into Kang’oma Riverbanks.

A witness, Saul Msiska, said it took them close to three hours to rescue the survivors because the horse of the truck was extremely damaged.

Three accidents have happened at the place in a space of two months. The first one involved a bus belonging to Axa Bus Services, when its front tyre burst. No death was registered. The recent one involved a minibus, which collided with a lorry where seven people lost their lives.

Chapola has since cushioned drivers to observe speed limits because the area is prone to accidents.

He added to say no arrests have been made because investigations are still underway.
