A 38-year-old woman in Karonga has allegedly poisoned her two children after her husband divorced her over suspected infidelity.

Regina Mulwafu of Wenela Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Mwaulambia in Chitipa, allegedly used pesticides to poison her daughters Tawana and Tawonga Zuze, aged seven and three, respectively.

Northern Region Police spokesperson Peter Kalaya said the suspect quarrelled with her husband in Mzuzu last week and he asked her to leave their matrimonial home together with the children.

He said: “They quarrelled over fidelity issues. We cannot say much as that was a private matter.

“The suspect reportedly left Mzuzu on Sunday evening and booked a room at a rest house in Karonga. She allegedly bought the poison there and gave it to the children before attempting to take her own life.”

Kalaya said Mulwafu informed police about the incident who rushed her and the children to Karonga District Hospital where the children were pronounced dead.

The suspect, who is still receiving medical treatment, will be charged with murder  once she has been discharged, according to Kalaya.
