Woman sues boss for assault

Blantyre-based woman Emily Kabisa Phiri, 34, who works as a security guard at Buffalo Guards, has dragged her boss to court on allegations of common assault.

Phiri told the police she was paid K6 000 $14) instead of K18 000 ($40) after working for a month in which she expected to get overtime pay as well.

She said when she enquired about the pay shortfall from the company’s accountant, operations manager Spencer Kaunda allegedly manhandled and beat her.

saw a copy of a bank transaction indicating a bill payment of K6 000 from First Merchant Bank (FMB) on January 3 2015 and a medical report from Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) showing she had suffered minor trauma and painful right chest. She was given painkillers and few days’ bed-rest.

Blantyre Police spokesperson Elizabeth Divala confirmed that Phiri reported the incident at the station and was given a medical report form.

“After seeing the report, her statement was recorded. The accused was summoned and his statement was recorded as well. A file was prepared for court on charges of common assault,” said Divala.

In a phone interview, Kaunda denied knowledge of the matter and said the issue never happened at their firm.

The case is expected to go to court on February 26, according to police.
