The Matindi Academy Schools Women Football Tournament reaches a climax in the Southern Region this Saturday as girls will take time off school work to fight for quarter-final berths.

According to Southern Region Women Football Committee (SRWFC) general secretary Immaculate Chiwaya, Blantyre is expected to produce four quarter-finalists whereas Balaka and Mulanje are set to identify one eligible team each.

She, however, said school teams in Mangochi will tussle for the two remaining quarter-final places next week.

In Blantyre, defending champions Matindi Academy will host Ndirande Institute of Education whereas Poly Ladies will be at home against Our Lady of Wisdom. Kalibu Academy and Namalimwe CDSS are already within the bracket of qualified teams.

In Balaka, St Charles Lwanga will face Andiamo Institute of Education at Balaka Stadium whereas Mulanje Secondary School will play Zomba-based Likangala Secondary School at Chiwembe ground in Blantyre.

“Do not be surprised to see a Zomba-based team taking on a Mulanje-based side. Likangala Secondary School was registered as a team from Mulanje because it was the only outfit that joined the competition from Zomba,” Chiwaya said.

At least 26 teams joined the annual competition whose 2013 season kicked-off over a month ago.
