Women in Thyolo District have commended Adolescent Girls and Young Women (AGYW) project for improving their lives socio-economically.

Speaking on Tuesday during a media tour, Thabwa Youth Club member Harriet Yobe, 28, from Chioko Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Chimaliro, said women have learned tailoring through the project.

The tailoring graduate from Amalika College said they acquired a sewing machine through the project and she is now training others.

“Through tailoring, I bought two pigs and I am planning to build a house,” she said.

Village head Chombo commended the project for empowering women economically.

“Women are now able to provide for themselves through selling clothes they sew,” he said.

Thyolo AGYM project officer Faith Kachala said the three-year project also includes reducing HIV prevalence in the district by increasing awareness, reducing school dropout and fighting GBV.

She said they have 252 school clubs and 67 out-of-school clubs each comprising 50 members in T/As Ngolongoliwa, Chimaliro, Bvumbwe, Thomas, Mphuka, Khwethemule, Nsabwe, Kapichi, Nanseta and Nchilamwela.

“We trained 25 members from each group how to make reusable sanitary pads,” she said.

The project started in June 2018 and ends this December.

ActionAid is implementing the project funded by Danish Church Aid through Global Fund.
