Office of the Vice-President special assistant on women affairs Patricia Shanil Dzimbiri has urged women in Traditional Authority (T/A) Malenga in Ntchisi to be self-reliant.

She said this yesterday during the launch of Rural Women Assembly at Kazonga Village in the area.

Dzimbiri said most women were facing gender-based violence (GBV) because they depend on men to take care of their basic needs.

“Women should work in groups to secure loans for their small-scale businesses,” she said.

Dzimbiri also said government is trying its best to empower women so that they can hold decision-making positions.

In his remarks, T/A Malenga said he is working with Ntchisi Police Station to fight GBV.

He welcomed the newly formed women group, saying it will strengthen the fight against GBV.

The group’s chairperson Emily Potifala said they will share knowledge on how to run small-scale businesses.
