Women’s team leave for Zambia

The Malawi women national team is expected to leave today (Tuesday) for Zambia with coach Temwa Msuku confident his charges can give the hosts Shepolopolo a decent run on Saturday.

The hosts are, however, in buoyant mood vowing to upset Malawi in this preliminary round first leg of the 2012 African Championship qualifiers scheduled for Lusaka’s Nkoloma Stadium.

Coach Msuku, whose right hand man is Richard Chipungu, will travel to Lusaka with an 18-member party.

“The defence is taking shape. It is compact and our attacking is getting better. We have also worked on overlapping and wall passes. Overall, the girls’ physical conditioning is sharp,” said Msuku.

Being his first assignment, Msuku will bank on the experience of the bulk of DD Sunshine’s experienced players who have faced Zambian sides before.

But Zambia captain Debora Chisanga told the country’s Daily Mail newspaper that the team has done its homework and is ready to score at least five goals on Saturday.

“Malawi is no stranger to us and I am very sure that we will beat them by a big margin on Saturday,” she was quoted as saying yesterday.

Shepolopolo first-choice goalkeeper Mirriam Katamanda said a comfortable home win is vital for them to progress in the competition.

“We have learnt a lot during the three weeks we have been in camp and we are just waiting for Saturday to deliver a good result,” she said.

Coach Enala Simbeya added: “I am proud of what we have scored so far in training. We have an advantage of playing the first leg at home and we need to win it for the many fans that will come to support us.”

Last year, Zambia beat a Malawi Select side 4-2 in an international friendly.
