Women’s football team yet to get Cecafa nod
The Council for East and Central Africa Football Association (Cecafa) is yet to respond to Football Association of Malawi’s (FAM) request for Malawi to participate in the inaugural edition of the Cecafa Women Championship slated Uganda next month.
National Women Football Committee (NWFC) chairperson Severia Chalira recently said K40 million is available for its participation at the Cecafa Cup.
But FAM general secretary Suzgo Nyirenda on Monday said Cecafa is yet to respond to the request.
“Nothing is currently available on the ground. We are still waiting for a response from Cecafa,” he said.
Nyirenda said the Cecafa board will meet at the end of this month to, among others, discuss Malawi’s request.
“Actually, it is not only women football; we have also requested that our Under-20 national team should participate in the Cecafa junior football men’s competition,” he said.
Meanwhile, Malawi women football team coach Thom Mkorongo has said the country has enough talent to compete at all levels.
The team has not been active since November when it lost 0-2 in a friendly match against Tanzania.
