Women’s group warms scholars

Over 70 women nationwide, have teamed up to raise resources to buy sweaters for primary school pupils to keep them warm during the winter season.

Trading under the banner Keep the Children Warm, the women have so far donated 190 sweaters to pupils at Naotcha Primary School in Blantyre.

Today, they are set to present 257 sweaters to Chiradzulu Primary School before presenting assorted clothing to newborns at Chiradzulu District Hospital.

The group’s leader Chikondi Ngwira said the goal of Keep the Children Warm is to ensure that no pupil fails to go to school because they lack a sweater.

“As a group, we pool resources together and we encourage the members to contribute clothes. But where members contribute cash, we use it to buy second-hand clothes,” she said.

According to Ngwira, the initiative has exposed how grave the situation is.

“We have only been to two schools where we discovered that over 400 are in dire need of warm clothing. Now imagine how the situation is across the country. We would love to reach out to more schools across the country, but that will depend on the availability of funds and resources,” she said.

“Our wish is to donate out to learners every week so that we reach 1 000 learners before winter is over. But like I said, all that depends on the availability of resources.” n

  1. Are these women a socialist movement or what? Buying sweaters is the responsibility of the children’s parents, your good will is definitely misplaced here. Please help to improve education standards in this country which are currently thrown to the dogs rather than buying sweaters………
This is why we can not stop overpopulation in this country becoz the responsibility of looking after children has been taken away from parents by these so called charity groups. And as result parents don’t see the problem with having many children they can’t afford to look after.
If a parent can’t even afford to buy their own child a sweater to keep them over the winter period, then perhaps they should think twice whether it was a good idea to have the child in the first place let alone having another child or children…………
