Women’s team propose Zambia/Zimbabwe friendly

National Women Football Committee (NWFC) has proposed an international friendly match against either Zimbabwe or Zambia in June following the cancellation of Confederation of Southern Africa Football Associations (Cosafa) Women Championships.

Organisers of Cosafa Championships, which were supposed to be held in Seychelles, cancelled the event in January after failing to secure sponsorship.

NWFC chairperson Severia Chalira told The Nation yesterday that the international match is aimed at protecting the national team’s recently-acquired Fifa rankings.

“We are desperate for the international friendly match because it will help maintain our standing on the rankings,” Chalira said.

FAM general secretary Suzgo Nyirenda confirmed yesterday that they have received the NWFC proposal and they are working on it.

“At present, it is too early to say whether the international friendly will be possible because there are so many processes to go through.

“We will scrutinise the proposal and we will announce what we have agreed,” he said.

If the international friendly proposal is accepted, the national women’s soccer team will be having their second international appearance since returning to international stage four months ago.

Malawi lost to Tanzania’s Twiga Stars 2-0 and is ranked 134 out of 140 on the rankings table.
