Word Alive Commission for Relief and Development, (Wacrad) on Monday donated 60 bicycles to the volunteers of Umodzi and Tawonga community-based organisations (CBOs) at Edingeni in Mzimba to ease their mobility.

Presenting the bicycles to the volunteers was Wacrad planning, monitoring, evaluation and learning officer Malani Nyirenda. He said his organisation gave the bicycles after noting that their volunteers were facing mobility challenges in the provision of services to the under-five children in community-based child care centres.

Nyirenda said Wacrad is committed to improving livelihoods of people in their catchment area of Edingeni; hence, the gift, which he said will assist the communities in ferrying drugs from Mzimba District Hospital and Edingeni Health Centre to patients in home-based care centres as well as taking under-five children to the hospital whenever they fall sick.

One of the recipients, James Mwale, a volunteer for Umodzi Home-Based Care, commended Wacrad for the bicycles. He said previously they used to cover distances of up to 15 kilometres on foot in their day to day work.

Speaking on behalf of Mzimba district commissioner, M’Mbelwa District Council director of administration Elector Patricia Mumba said Wacrad’s gift is a commendable gesture.
