Word Alive Commission for Relief & Development (Wacrad) recently donated various school materials to girls from Traditional Authority (T/A) Kapeni in Blantyre.

The items are part of Wacrad’s Back to School Project aimed at encouraging and motivating under-privileged girls to work hard and further their studies.

Project Chaplain Reverend George Kukhala said there is a high rate of school dropout among girls in the area due to early pregnancies and marriages; poverty and peer pressure.

“We found the school dropout to be high among girls in this area. The main reason is that most girls are orphans and poor; hence, end up being impregnated. With this background, we mobilised teachers and chiefs to give us names of vulnerable girls we could help,” he said.

His organisation presented uniforms, school bags, school shoes and socks, notebooks as well as tablets of soap to 17 girls.
