Access and quality of tertiary are expected to improve following revelations that the World Bank is committed to support the country’s functioning public universities with U$7 million each.

The institutions to benefit are Mzuzu University (Mzuni), Chancellor College, The Polytechnic and Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (Luanar)

According to Principal Secretary for higher education Patrick Kabambe, the aim of the project is to increase access and quality of education in the public universities.

He said the criterion for funding the activities was for the universities to identify areas that need improvement. He said funding will only be disbursed after the universities make proper submissions of their needs.

Kabambe said the project was crucial for the country’s tertiary education as the country strives to improve access and quality of education.

He said good submissions by the universities will mean a significant change in the country’s education

“The approach for this project is quite different from other World Bank projects. For this project we will be able to tell how much the project is worth only upon properly assessing submissions.

“The beneficiaries of the project are Mzuni, Chancellor College, the Polytechnic and Luanar,” said Kabambe.
