World Vision Malawi has outlined its two-year phase out plan in Chikwawa District with an assurance that it will prepare the people to be independent.

The organisation’s advisory council member Lucy Kachala said this on Thursday at Ngabu Rural Hospital where World Vision handed over health equipment valued at K10 million.

The organisation will wind up its projects in the district in 2019.

“World Vision has a strategy to prepare the community two to three years before phasing out a project. They go through a transition that prepares them to do things on their own and help them in areas they are not doing well.

“We are making sure that by the time we will  be phasing out, the rural people we support are empowered,” said Kachala.

She said they are already happy that the people have successfully won the cholera fight, observing that the district has not registered any cholera outbreak this year.

“We mainly target children and women. So far, we have reached three of the four million children in Malawi..

“The K10 million donation is part of the K84 million worth of medical equipment donated to Chikwawa, Balaka, Ntcheu, Salima, Mchinji, Dowa and Ntchisi districts,” said Kachala.

Chikwawa district director of health and civil services Stalin Zinkanda thanked World Vision for the donation, saying Ngabu Rural Hospital has a number of challenges.

“Although government is trying to ensure quality health service, it is not enough. Government provides only 20 percent of the needs and the remainder comes from our partners.

“We have transport problems at Ngabu Rural Hospital and the theatre has not been working for three years now. We are trying to solve these, but we still need more support,” he said.

The donated items include mattress covers, patient monitoring system, stethoscopes, doopler, laryngoscopes and clutches for adults.

In September next year, World Vision will clock 20 years in Chikwawa District.
