Ndirande Water Users Association (WUA), as a social obligation to support the communities they work in, Fridayhanded over 10 bags of cement to Blantyre Synod of the CCAP’s Chifundo II Orphanage and Vulnerable Children Centre.

The cement is meant to rehabilitate a brick wall that fell down in January due to heavy rains that rendered the institution insecure.

Receiving the donation, vice chairperson Chrissie Mkumba and community worker Judith Chimseu said were thankful to the WUA for the generous donation, saying the centre could not carry out some activities due to insecurity at the centre.

“Since the wall fell down, we suspended some of our income generating activities (IGAs) like poultry farming and gardening because of insecurity.

“But now we will restart the IGAs. We also appeal to other well-wishers to assist us with Likuni Phala, bags of maize and money for relish since we run feeding programmes for the vulnerable children,” said Mkumba.

The community based childcare centre (CBCC) has a garden where they grow maize to feed the children but they lack seed and fertiliser. They also struggle to buy chicks and feed for their poultry farming.

Currently, the centre has 60 children but it has capacity to keep 100.

Ndirande WUA board chair Sylvester Zgambo said they decided to make the donation because the centre benefits children within the same community they operate and make money from, through sale of water.

“It is just a payback to the community we serve. When we received a request to assist, we did not hesitate because we have been seeing the fallen brick wall and appreciated how insecure the place was, we had no choice but to assist,” said Zgambo.

Village head Mtambalika called on other organisations, including government, to come in and assist.
