Malunga said his interest to contest for the chairperson post follows “overwhelming” encouragement from Wanderers fans some of whom chanted “Yona abwelere!” during the team’s TNM Super League match against Mafco FC last weekend at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre.

“I am not trying to create confusion, but the tenure for the current executive is heading towards the end. Wanderers supporters love me so much and I cannot let them down. They want to see me on the terraces again as their chairperson,” he said.

Wanderers’ Chilobwe Zone chairperson Joseph Chimango and Zingwangwa Zone vice-chairperson Ernest Phiri called The Nation yesterday saying they were conducting a meeting that has endorsed Malunga as their candidate for the post.

“In the next polls, we have agreed that Malunga will stand for the chairperson post while I will vie for the general secretary seat,” said Chimango.

Ndirande Township-based fan Ernest Malola said with the season drawing to an end, they have already started preparing for elections.

Nevertheless, the current supporters chairperson Dines Chitsulo said he was not moved by Malunga’s intentions and he will not talk about the impending elections until the end of the season.

“At present, my focus is on helping our team to finish the season on a better position. I will not talk about the elections until I see where our team will rest after this season’s league campaign,” Chitsulo said.

According to Wanderers’ Electoral Committee member Henry Chibowa, the elections for the executive and the supporters committees are supposed to take place two years after the last polls in March 2014, as per the agreement at the previous elections.

“Unless otherwise advised by the Wanderers’ board of trustees, the next elections will take place at the end of two-year tenure since the previous polls,” he said. n
