Yoneco sensitises pupils in gender-based violence

Youth Net and Counselling (Yoneco) last Saturday held a sensitisation campaign on gender-based violence against children at Chikhwawa Community Ground.

The campaign, which is called School Star Programme, is aimed at equipping pupils and teachers with skills so that they can positively fight violence faced by children.

In an interview, Yoneco project officer, Hughes Munthali, said the organisation is creating awareness among learners and the community at large about where they can report cases related to gender-based violence that young people face.

“We may not have an office in the district, but we still decided to sensitise the public about how they can access our services. It is our plea that the public would inform us about any violation of children’s rights through our toll free line,” said Munthali.

Yoneco’s toll free line for the purpose is 166.

Chikhwawa Police Station officer-in-charge, McMillan Nyirongo, admitted that the district is registering a rising number of cases of child abuse and he urged stakeholders to work together to curb the malpractice.

Star School Programme is financially supported by Edukans in Netherlands and Yoneco is implementing it in Chikhwawa at Mitole and Chilongoma primary schools in Chikhwawa Boma Educational Zone.
