Students from Skyway University in Blantyre, under the banner of Maestros Leadership Team, yesterday swept Salmin Amour Road at Ginnery Corner as part of celebrations to mark this year’s Africa Day which falls on May 25.

Coordinator for the team, Twaina Sadiki, said they embarked on the initiative to act as an example among fellow youths in the country.

“Since we, the youth, are future leaders, we strive to make a difference. And in this case, we decided to sweep this avenue not only as part of the African Day but also show the world that we can indeed make a difference,” she said.

Sadiki further said the Maestros Team is geared to make a change in society as they are planning to hold charity works nationwide.

Her sentiments were echoed by another member of the group, Aaron Mussa Mikonde, who said the initiative is one way to prove that youths in the country are striving to make a positive change, hence they need empowerment from relevant authorities.

He said: “Though the initiative may seem small, it is very significant in the sense that we will pave the way for other youths who would want to push for change in our society.”

Maestros Leadership Team is a grouping of students from various universities both in Malawi and abroad that advocate for youth empowerment, youth leadership and stability of the economy, among other issues. n
