Evangelical Lutheran Development Service project has supported youth tailors in Mwanza with materials to sew face masks for distribution to vulnerable community members surrounding the border post.

In an interview, the organisation’s Mwanza senior development officer Precious Chikwatula said they want to reduce local transmission of Covid-19.

He said: “We have also conducted awareness campaigns about the the pandemic among high risk population.

“About 4 000 beneficiaries in the district are expected to receive the face masks which will be produced by 25 youth tailors.”

Mwanza District Youth Network chairperson Moris Mtimauliranji said the support will help people who cannot afford to buy face masks.

“It is good to conduct awareness campaigns and provide personal protective equipment at the same time,” he said.

Mwanza district youth officer Kazembe Juma commended the organisation for the support.

The organisation is running a Community Awareness and Mobilisation of High Risk Population Project that seeks to reduce local transmission of Covid-19 and prevent its related deaths in the district.

The project was extended for another four months from April this year with support from the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
