Over 22 percent of youths in Mzimba Luwerezi have been elected into area development committees (ADCs) and village development committees (VDCs) to give them a platform to contribute ideas on issues that concern them.

This follows the introduction of a Speak Out project by Muumoza Youth Organisation which advocates youth inclusion in development committees.

Muumoza Youth Organisation director Bartholomew Shaba on Tuesday said through the project, the youth have been drilled in leadership skills which will produce a developed community where everyone enjoys their rights through participation, involvement and provision of information.

He said chiefs now understand the importance of involving the youth in various development committees because they can bring change in the way developmental affairs are run in the communities.

Said Shaba: “We are very proud that the youth are now elected into development committees. I believe the choice of development in the communities would also consider the youth’s concerns as one of the priorities.”

Group village head Christopher Kaunda said time has come for the youth to take up leadership positions in society.

The 13-month Speak Out project is being supported by Tilitonse Fund to the tune of K10 million and is targeting about 250 youths in Mzimba-Luwerezi. n
