Youths to petition President on sachets

Youth grouping, Young Achievers for Development (YAD), plans to petition President Peter Mutharika to consider a ban on liquor packed in sachets.

YAD president Jefferson Milanzie said this was because Parliament did not discuss a petition they presented to the House last month through Peter Chakhwantha, chairperson for Parliamentary Legal Affairs Committee.

“Failure to discuss the petition is a clear indication authorities choose not to be responsible towards the youth. No leader can be proud to head an alcoholic society that is full of drunkards, hence our confidence that the President will act on the petition when we present it to him,” said Milanzie.

According to him, the group will launch the Red Card Campaign against sachets at Comesa Hall in Blantyre this month where, among other things, a candlelight memorial will be held for people who have died of the effects of sachet alcohol abuse.
