ZA United dismiss disbanding fears

Zomba United have dismissed reports suggesting that the former TNM Super League side has closed shop.

The team’s general secretary Kondwani Chavula on Thursday said he was inundated with calls over the future of the club that was once the pride of the old capital.

“The fact that some of our players are featuring for other teams in the Presidential Initiative on Sports (PIS) district cup does not mean we have closed shop. I do not know who is spreading these reports,” said Chavula.

He said they opted not to register for the cup because, they felt it could be a strain on their resources.

“We have maintained our squad and our focus is on the Premier Division games,” he said.

The Nation

reported on Tuesday that some Zomba United players featured for giant killers Complex Madrid when last weekend they beat Chaof FC 6-2 in the PIS competition at Zomba Community.

Some teams have shunned the competition this year due to the hike in affiliation fees from K1 000 (about $2.5) to K5 000 (about $12.50).

United were relegated from the Super League two seasons ago and are in mid table of the Premier Division of the Southern Region Football League.
