Zathu pa Wailesi, a drama series aired on Zodiak Broadcasting Station, Yoneco Radio, MBC Radio 2, and some community radio stations, is impacting and changing lives of young people.

Zathu brand ambassador Taonga Nyirongo, speaking in an interview, gave the example of a girl who dropped out of school after falling pregnant in Machinga but re-enrolled after being motivated by Chikondi, a teen mother in Zathu Band.

“There is a huge gap between boys and girls; they think they cannot work together. However, in Machinga, many youth clubs have been formed and are doing various activities such as cleaning the streets and starting up village savings and loans,” she said recently at Malikha Primary School in Lilongwe when Zathu pa Wailesi launched the Zathu Magazine.

Enelless Gibson, 13, from Lilongwe, said they are learning a lot from both Zathu radio drama and magazine.

On his part, Malikha Primary School head teacher Lyford Chilamba hailed Zathu pa Wailesi for encouraging the youth to freely discuss issues that affect them in their everyday lives.

The newly-launched Zathu Magazine will act as a source of expression for girls and boys aged 12 to 17 in the country. The magazine is aimed at inspiring, entertaining and educating the youth through real life stories, fiction, quizzes, games and questions and answers.

Zathu is a Girl Effect initiative created in collaboration with young Malawians which was launched in April 2017.

They have had performances in London and Scotland for Lake of Stars. n
