Head of the Archdiocese of Lilongwe Tarcisius Ziyaye last Sunday commissioned over 75 lay Catholics appointed to help in preparing for the Association of Member Episcopal Conferences of Eastern and Central Africa (AMECEA) summit.

The summit—expected to attract more than 300 delegates including cardinals, archbishops and bishops from the Amecea region—will be held in Lilongwe from July 14 to July 26 this year.

Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, Ziyaye said he was happy with the overwhelming response the summit has received from local Catholics.

“Although the notices were sent late, your coming in large numbers confirms your love for the church. This gives me great confidence that the Amecea meeting will be a success,” he said.

Ziyaye advised the appointed members to be diligent when carrying out spiritual activities, saying “hard work in the church is the perfection of our being.”

“The time that you dedicate to church activities will never be in vain. You will certainly be rewarded,” he said.

The commissioned Catholics, who were nominated from their parishes based on expertise and gifts in various fields, are expected to join more than 20 others who have been conducting preliminary preparations such as resource mobilisation and publicity for the summit since 2012.

Ziyaye had earlier issued a circular inviting volunteers to register with his office, indicating the areas they would want to help and the needs to enable them carry out their duties.

Meanwhile, the Catholic Church has organised a ‘renewal of wedding vows’ ceremony on April 26 2014, Eucharistic celebration at St. Patrick’s Parish in Area 18 and a reception at Bingu International Conference Centre as part of the initiatives for raising resources for the summit.
