A wave of excitement swept through the island last week when Zodiak switched on the airwaves at 94.0 FM.

ZBS managing director Gospel Kazako said the decision to plant a transmitter on Likoma is based on the understanding that the island, though isolated, is still part of Malawi.

“We felt that although Likoma residents struggle in many things, they shouldn’t struggle on information. Which is why we decided to invest in a transmitter for the island,” he said.

Kazako noted that although the cost of planting a transmitter in Likoma is expensive owing to the island’s small population, the investment counts.

“For us, every Malawian matters and nobody should be left behind. Likoma is part of Malawi, so when it happens, they too must be able access the news,” he said, adding that Zodiak has since dedicated a fulltime reporter on the island.

Gerald Banda, a Likoma resident, who was on sight when the transmitter was switched on, was in awe at Zodiak’s gesture.

“It is true that we are often left out when it comes to development and the fact that Zodiak have come all this way to erect a transmitter is a sign of goodwill,” he said.

ZBS, which clocks 10 years next year, will soon launch their television station before the end of next month, according to Kazako.
